U.S. expects Armenian government to live up to clean vote promise

United States Ambassador John Heffern expects the political leadership in Armenia to live up to its promise of holding free and fair elections and also sees a role for the country’s opposition and civil society in “holding the government to its promise.”

At a news conference on Thursday Heffern stressed that the United States welcomes the assurances made by Armenian government officials ahead of the May 6 parliamentary vote.

“When assurances like that are given at the highest level and with such clarity, we assume that it means something and that it will be implemented as promised,” Heffern said, adding that it is not only up to the government to ensure the proper conduct of elections.

“The opposition parties, civil society and the press also have a role to hold the government to its promise of free and fair elections,” the U.S. ambassador emphasized.
