Dr Armen Souren Sahakian

| Armen Sahakian was born in Baghdad, Iraq in September 1933 to his mother Margaret and father Souren. After some turbulent years for them between Baghdad and Beirut, the family including his younger sister Madeleine, settled in Tehran, Iran in the early 1940s. Their older brother Leon was to join them later. As a young man growing up in Tehran, Armen was an active student at the American Missionary School. He would look back upon this time very fondly.
Armen obtained his bachelors and masters degrees at Michigan State University and after attaining his Geology PhD from Harvard University, he met his wife Nairi (née Karapetian). Immediately after their wedding in 1967, they started married life in New York, soon afterwards to be posted to London in his role working for Conoco. In 1969 their son Haik was born and subsequently in 1972, their daughter Ani. With more than 40 years experience working in the oil industry, he held senior management positions in business development and international petroleum negotiations. Among the companies and institutions he worked for included Conoco, OMV, Partex Oil and Gas and the World Bank, where he served as petroleum advisor on the Oil and Gas Division’s financed petroleum projects. Most recently he concluded his career as Vice President of business development for Heritage Oil. His career took him across the world, from the tribes of Guinea Bissau to the Artic Circle in Siberia and his passion for books and classical music accompanied him along the way. Armen served the community as Chairman of the Armenian Church Council of Great Britain (1988-1992) and throughout the years continued to be active, in particular as a member of CRAG (Committee for the Recognition of the Armenian Genocide). On May 28th 2018 he was able to conduct the unveiling of a statue of his grandfather, Avedik Sahakian (Hayr Abraham), Parliamentary President of the First Independent Republic of Armenia, to commemorate the centenary in his grandfather’s very birthplace of Stepanavan, Armenia. In addition, in recent years he fulfilled his dream of bequeathing his rare book collection to the Matenadaran Museum in Yerevan, to ensure it can be enjoyed there for generations to come. Armen Sahakian died after a short illness on 4th July 2020, at home and surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife Nairi, his children Haik and Ani, his sister Madeleine Minassian and his grandchildren Lori, Raffi and Kate. The Minassian family live in Los Angeles and the Palian family (of his late brother Leon) reside in Washington DC. The funeral service is to take place on Wednesday 15th July 2020 at 12pm at St Yeghiche Church, Cranley Gardens, London, England. It is with deep regret that owing to the current restrictions, the cemetery service is private.

Արմէն Սահակեանը ծնւել է Պաղտատ, Իրաք Սեպտեմբեր 1933-ին, զաւակը Մարգարիտ եւ Սուրէն Սահակեաններին։ Պաղտատի եւ Բէյրութի միջեւ անկայուն մի քանի տարիներ անց ընտանիքը, ներառեալ փոքր քոյրը Մադլէն, 1940 թուականին տեղափոխւում է Թէհրան, Իրան։ Յետոյ նրանց կը միանայ Արմէնի աւագ եղբայրը Լեւոն։ Երիտասարդ տարիներին Թէհրանում՝, Արմէնն աշխուժ եւ պարտաճանաչ ուսանող էր Ամերիկեան Միսիոներական Դպրոցին։ Նա շարունակ գուրգուրանքով էր յիշում այդ ժամանակները։ Արմէնն իր համալսարանական առաջին եւ երկրորդ աստիճանների վկայականները կ՛ստանայ ԱՄՆ Միշիգըն Սթէյթ Համալսարանից եւ մասնագիտանալով Երկրաբանական (Geology) գիտութիւնների ասպարէզում ձեռք կը բերէ PhD (Փիլիսոփայական Տոքդորի) վկայականը ԱՄՆ Հարվըրդի Համալսարանից։ Հանդիպելով իր ապագայ կնոջ Նայիրին (օրիորդական ազգանուն՝ Կարապետեան) եւ ամուսնանալուց յետոյ 1967 թուականին, բնակութիւն են հաստատում Նիւ Եորք մինչեւ իր գործուղումը Լոնդոն որպէս պաշտօնեայ “Քոնոքո” ընկերութեան։ 1969 թուականին ծնւեց իրենց տղան՝ Հայկը, իսկ 1972 -ին իրենց աղջիկը՝ Անին։ Քարիւղի ասպարէզում ձեռք բերուած քառասուն երկար տարիների փորձառութեամբ Արմէնը կը վարէ աւագ տնօրէնի զանազան պաշտօններ Գործարքի Զարգացման (Bussiness Development) ասպարէզին մէջ եւ որպէս Քարիւղի միջազգային բանակցող (International Petroleum Negotiator)։ նրա աշխատած զանազան ընկերութիւններում ու հաստատութիւններում կարելի է ընդկրկէլ “Conoco”, “OMV”, “Partex Oil and Gas” եւ “World Bank” ուր վարել է խորհրդատուի պաշտօնը Քարիւղ եւ Գազ Բաժանմունքի Քարիւղի ծրագիրներուն նիւթական աղբիւրների ապահովման Խնդիրներով։ Վերջերս նա իր աշխատանքային ասպարէզը եզրափակեց Heritage Oil ընկերութիւնում՝ Գործարքի Զարգացման (Bussiness Development) բաժանմունքի նախագահի տեղակալի պաշտօնով։ Նրա աշխատանքային ասպարէզը տարաւ իրեն աշխարհի զանազան անկիւններ՝ Գինի Բիսաուի ցեղախումբերէն մինչեւ Սիբիրիոյ բեւեռային շրջանները, ընթերցանութեան եւ դասական երաժշտութեան իր սէրը միշտ մնալով նրա հետ։ 1988 – 1992 տարիներին Արմէնն ընտրուեց որպէս Մեծն Բրիտանիոյ Համայնքային եւ Եկեղեցական Խորհուրդի անդամ եւ նախագահ, երկար տարիներ շարունակելով իր աշխուժ ծառայութիւնը նոյն Խորհուրդի հովանավորութեան տակ գտնւող Հայոց Ցեղասպանութեան Ճանաչման Յանձնախումբին (CRAG)։ Մայիսի 28-ին, 2018, Հայաստանի անկախացման 100-ամեակի առիթով, Հայրենի Ստեփանավան քաղաքում Արմէնը վերջապէս կարողացաւ իր ձեռամբ բացումը կատարել իր Մեծ Հօր՝ առաջին անկախ հանրապետութեան Պարլեամենտի առաջին նախագահ Աւետիք Սահակեանի (Հայր Աբրահամ) յուշարձանին։ Արդարեւ, նա իր վերջին տարիներին կարողացաւ նաեւ իրականացնել իր երկար տարիների երազանքը՝ իր հազուագիւտ գիրքերի ժողովածուն կտակելու Երեւանի Մատենադարանին վստահ լինելու համար որ այդ գիրքերը կը գործածուեն յառաջիկայ սերունդների կողմից։ Արմէն Սահակեանն իր մահկանացուն կնքեց իր տանը կարճատեւ հիւանդութիւնից յետոյ ամսուս 4 Յուլիս 2020-ին շրջապատուած իր ընտանիքի անդամներով։ Իր մահը գուժում են իր կինը նայիրին, զաւակները՝ Հայկ եւ Անին, իր քոյրը Մադլէն Մինասեան եւ իր թոռները՝ Լօրի, Րաֆֆի եւ Քէյթ։ Մինասեան ընտանիքը այժմ կը բնակի Լոս Անճելես իսկ իր հանգուցեալ եղբոր Լեւոնի՝ Պալեան ընտանիքը կապրի Վաշինգտոնում։ Յուղարկաւորութիւնը տեղի պիտի ունենայ 15 Յուլիս 2020-ին կէսօրին ժամը 12-00-ին Ս. Եղիշէ Եկեղեցիում Cranley Gardens, London, England։ Ցաւօք սրտի, թաղման արարողութիւնը որը պիտի կատարուի Gunnersbury գերեզմանոցում սահմանափակուած է ընտանիքին եւ հարազատներին միայն։ |
