                     Official Recognition by the
                     City Of Edinburgh Council
                     of the Armenian Genocide

17th November 2005

At the sitting of the City Council of Edinburg, Capital City of Scotland, the Council agreed
to pass a motion proposed by the Leader of the Labour majority Mr Donald Anderson supporting
the view that the Ottoman actions against the Armenian community did constitute genocide
.

Prior to the meeting enormous work and lobbying was carried out over the last six months by Turkish
organisations to prevent the consideration of the motion and for the Council to refrain from voting on the
issue.

At the meeting of the Council on Thursday 17th of November, 2005, deputations were allowed to attend
the Council meeting and present arguments for and against adoption of the Motion.

Deputations from three Turkish organisations presented arguments against the motion through three speakers.
The Armenian deputations were from the Armenian Community & Church Council of Great Britain (ACCC)
and from Campaign for Recognition of the Armenian Genocide (CRAG).
The speakers from the Armenian deputations were Dr Harry Hagopian and Dr Hagop Bessos and they were
accompanied by Dr Donald Bloxham, Professor of History at the University of Edinburgh who presented
arguments in favour of passing the Motion from a Historian's viewpoint.

Despite en-bloc opposition from the Council members from the Conservative Party, the motion was passed
( 29 votes in favour, 16 votes against ) with the support of the members from the Labour and of the Liberal
Democratic Parties.

BRITISH HISTORIAN SAYS
" TURKS MUST ADMIT ARMENIAN DEATHS "

Eminent historian and lecturer at Edinburgh University, Donald Bloxham has written to The Scotsman saying " Those who deny the orchestrated mass murder of the majority of the Ottoman Armenian community are akin to flat-earth theorists -- They are flying in the face of a mountain of evidence that has convinced every objective specialist historian that genocide took place in 1915-16"

Sarafian maintains that Turkish parliamentarians deliberately avoided addressing

He said the Turkish stance was akin to Holocaust deniers and this was why Sarafian called Turkish

                         British Government Refuses
                     to "Reconsider" the "BLUE BOOK"

The British Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Foreign & Commonwealth Office - through its Ambassador to Turkey Sir Peter Westmacott, refused to entertain the request made
by the Turkish Parliament last April to
"reconsider" the "Blue Book", a 1916
parliamentary report, formally titled,
" Treatment of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire
1915-16,
" that documents the sytematic, deliberate and politically motivated nature
of the Armenian Genocide.

In a letter, Sir Peter Westmacott officially explained that the Blue Book was the
property and publication of the British Parliament.  He emphasized that – contrary to
the insinuations of the Turkish parliamentarians –
"none of the individual reports
[presented in the document] has been refuted
" and that the moral and intellectual
probity of the authors, Lord Bryce and the prominent historian Arnold J. Toynbee
 – may not be questioned.

PRESIDENT OF EUROPEAN COMMISSION CALLS ON
       TURKEY TO RECOGNISE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

For the first time the Commission has Directly Pressed Ankara to end its Campaign of Armenian Genocide Denial

In an unprecedented move the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, has directly called upon Turkey to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide.

During a recent speech at Harvard University, Mr. Barroso stressed, "We should bear in mind that Turkey is an important state and has great potential from the viewpoint of the social and economic future of Europe. However the problem of Kurds and national minorities still remains a very delicate matter for Turkey. National minorities in Turkey constantly face infringement of their human rights."

In his remarks about European relations with Turkey, Mr Barroso stated that Ankara is developing relations with  Greece and should adopt a similarly constructive approach toward Armenia. He explained that, "Turks should  acknowledge the reality of the Armenian Genocide. Orhan Pamuk's case is an inadmissible step from the standpoint  of freedom of speech. Turkey should refrain from simplified attitude towards the Armenian issue. Europeans dislike the words 'there was no Genocide.' Ankara's best move would be the acknowledgment of the Armenian Genocide and opening the borders with Armenia."

                  Anti-Armenian Materials Seized
                       at London Airport

ANKARA--The Anadolu News Agency reports that according to an October 23 article in the Turkish Zaman Daily, police seized Anti-Armenian CDs and DVDs en route to Scotland at London's Stansted Airport on Saturday 22 October. The materials were headed for a symposium scheduled to take place on October 24 at the Edinburgh City Hall in Scotland.

According to Zaman, the conference, "1915 Ottoman-Turk Armenian Tragedy of the War Period," was organized by the Turkish community in Britain to review the "events of 1915 from their own perspective." It also reports that the symposium is organized by the Federation to Fight Against the Unfounded Armenian Allegations (ASEF) and the Britain Turkish Associations Confederation.

E.U. - Turkey and the Armenian Genocide
                                     By Dr. Harry Hagopian

"Once recognition by Turkey of this human rights travesty occurs, and the sacrifices of well over one million Armenian men, women and children during the period 1915-1923 are marked with closure, we could underline with conviction the maxim audere est facere - to dare is to do - in the sense that we dared together to overcome the physical, psychological and historical traumas of a painful and stolen past."

TIME magazine's response does not redress the terrible suffering of those who saw this sordid tool of denialist propaganda. Taking into account the most heinous content of this DVD, our demands for redress go far beyond this simple right of reply and we intend to attain them,"

                                         European Parliament Resolution:
Turkey's Recognition of Armenian Genocide is
Prerequisite to its Accession to the European Union

In a resolution adopted by the European Parliament on 28th September, 2005, by 356 votes in favour, 181 against and 125 abstentions, Parliament noted the Commission's and Council's view that access negotiations with Turkey can start on 3 October.

A
s part of the same resolution, the European Parliament also noted the fact that Turkish authorities still had not satisfied the requirements concerning the Armenian questions such as they were expressed by the European Parliament in its resolution of June 18, 1987 calling on Turkey to recognise the Genocide of the Armenians in Ottoman Turkey,  and the European Parliament therefore resolved to "call on Turkey to recognize the Genocide of the Armenians," and that the Parliament considers this act a "prerequisite to accession to the European Union."

                  British Armenian Community Celebrates
  Armenian Independence Day

On Saturday 21st of September, 2005 the Armenian Community of London gathered together at the St. Yeghiche Church in Kensington to celebrate the 14th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Armenia.

The evening which was organised by the Executive Committee of the ACCC was an immense success as the capacity audience of over 600 enjoyed brilliant performances by numerous young Armenian artists from both Britain as well as from Armenia.

The evening's programme also included short speeches by His Grace Bishop Nathan Hovhannisian, Primate of the Armenian Church in the U.K., Dr. Vahe Gabrielyan, Ambassador of Armenia and Mr Ara Palamoudian, Chairman of the Armenian Community & Church Council of Great Britain.

Special thanks to all those who took part in the evening's programme. Their names and photographs appear in the evening's album of photographs.

Thanks also to all those who helped in organising the evening and especially to Rousanna Tatulian and Matilda Megerdichian who both worked extremely hard to bring together so many artists and performers and who were instrumental in producing such a successful programme.

Special mention should also be made of Varoujan Utuvjian and Aram Tateossian for their most important function of so expertly operating the elaborate sound equipment, and last but not at all least thanks to Dr Harry Hagopian who once again this year so eloquently and efficiently introduced and managed the evening's programme.

OVERWHELMINGLY ADOPTS ARMENIAN GENOCIDE LEGISLATION

Passage Comes Despite the Strident Opposition from Turkish Embassy, The Livingston Group, and American Turkish Council

WASHINGTON, DC - 15 September 2005
Following almost three hours of remarks by a bipartisan group of 24 Members of Congress, the House International Relations Committee, today, voted in favor of two measures calling for proper U.S. recognition of the Armenian Genocide and urging Turkey to end its decades long denial of this crime against humanity, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA). The votes clear yet another hurdle toward full House recognition of the Armenian Genocide  ---

Mr Raffi Sarkissian, Chairman of CRAG - Campaign for Recognition of the Armenian Genocide -  presented a highly detailed and scholarly paper to a special conference held on 1-2 September, 2005,  at the Nottingham Trent University, in the presence of highly eminent international judges, lawyers and scholars from Europe, Africa and the USA.

                                   TIME Magazine Apologises

Harut Sassounian - California Courier - Reports:

 - - - Six weeks ago, the Switzerland-Armenia Association (SAA) sent a letter of protest to TIME magazine expressing its "shock and disappointment" that TIME included in its European Edition (June 6, 2005 issue), as a paid ad, a Turkish DVD that denied the Armenian Genocide.

James Kelly, the Managing Editor of TIME, responded last week to SAA's letter by stating: "We regret distributing the [Turkish] DVD as part of TIME's European edition and are very sorry for the offense it has  caused. The so-called 'documentary' portion of the DVD presents a one-sided view of history that does not meet our standards for fairness and accuracy, and we would not have distributed it had we been aware of its content. Unfortunately the DVD was not adequately reviewed by anyone at TIME because it was believed to be a benign promotion piece. I can assure you that we have changed our review process and will be much more vigilant in the future. We apologize to the Armenian community, and to our readers." - - -
