A Message to the Community |

Dear Armenians in Britain,
Greetings to you all in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Today, I rejoice
with you all for this new cyber-medium that allows us to share together the news of our Armenian Church and Community in Great Britain. Indeed, the new ACCC website is a big stride in the right direction as
it attempts to provide you with instant access to information about the various dimensions and compartments of our lives in this country. |

Central to this whole structure is the Church. Indeed, and throughout our history, the Armenian Apostolic Church has been one of the
fundamental keepers of the Armenian identity. Through a Christian faith that has been ours for over 1700 years, coupled with our language and institutions, Armenians have managed to maintain their ethos wherever they
have found themselves. Be it in our independent Hairenik or in the Diaspora, despite the gruesome experiences of the Genocide during WWI, a murderous war with Azerbaidjan some two decades ago, let alone the economic and
social upheavals we have all felt in one way or another, the Armenian flame continues to burn - at times steadily, and at others waveringly!
This huge legacy is yours to defend, as much as strengthen, each
passing day. It is yours to live with and to be proud of, as have our forebears for centuries. And as you wear proudly the mantle of your Armenian identity, I hope you will also live your faith for what are human
beings without faith but crucibles without substance? Come to Church on Sundays and feast days, exult in your spirituality, work with your neighbour as you do with your family and friends, and support your institutions
and community structures.
Almost three years into my ministry here, and with the grace of the Holy Spirit, I am gradually learning the ropes of being the Primate of the Church in Great Britain. I hope for great
things as we work together in order to consolidate our collective Armenian future.
May the Risen Lord bless you all, and may He enrich your lives in their diversity.Bishop Nathan Hovhannisian

THE ARMENIAN APOSTOLIC CHURCH
By Dr Hratch Tchilingirian |
 |
 |
|
The Armenian Apostolic Church is one of the oldest branches of the Christian faith. According to tradition, two of Christ's
Apostles St. Thaddeus and St. Bartholomew preached the Gospel in Armenia as early as the second half of the 1st century. In the early 4th century, St. Gregory The Illuminator (c. 240-235 A.D.) formally
established the Church in Armenia, when King Tiridates III was baptized and declared Christianity as state religion in 301 A.D.The Christianisation of Armenia determined the entire future course of
Armenian history. In order to make the Christian faith accessible to the people in a written form, a monk by the name of Mesrob Mashdots created the Armenian alphabet in 406 A.D. Soon after, the Holy
Scriptures were translated into Armenian, followed by the biblical, theological and liturgical writings of eminent Church Fathers. This most important era is known as the Golden Age of Armenian history.
The Faith of the Armenian Church is transmitted through the church's Holy Tradition. The Bible, Liturgy and worship, writings of the Church Fathers, Church Councils, saints, canons, religious art and
rituals organically linked together formulate the Holy Tradition of the Church. This faith is articulated in the Creed of the Armenian Church, which in turn defines the church's raison d'etre and sets
the parameters of its modus operandi. |
|
 |
 |
|
The Armenian Church belongs to the 'Orthodox' family of churches, known as the Ancient Oriental Orthodox or
Non-Chalcedonian Churches namely, the Armenian, Coptic, Syrian, Ethiopian and Indian Malabar Churches. The functional structure of the Armenian Church is primarily based on the canons and
established traditions of the Armenian Church which were formulated over the centuries. One of the most important aspects of the Armenian Church administration is its counciliar system. The administrative,
doctrinal, liturgical and canonical norms of the Church are set and approved by a collective and participatory decision making process. The Chief Bishop and Supreme Head of the Armenian Church
is the Catholicos of All Armenians, who resides in Holy Etchmiadzin, near Armenia's capital Yerevan. A National Ecclesiastical Assembly consisting of clergy and lay representatives of the
Armenian churches from around the world elects the Catholicos. There are four hierarchical Sees in the Armenian Church: the Catholicossate of All Armenians in Holy Etchmiadzin; the
Catholicossate of the Great House of Cilicia (established in Lebanon in 1930, but roots go back to 15th century); the Patriarchate of Jerusalem (established in the early 7th century); and the Patriarchate of
Constantinople (established in 1461). |
