ARMENIAN CHURCH IN DANGER OF COLLAPSE
In an article published 19 May 2004, the Turkish "On-Line" Newspaper 'ZAMAN' writes of the devastation of the 10th Century Armenian Church of Akhtamar on the shores of Lake Van currently in Turkey.

This beauitiful example of Early Armenian Christian Architecture has been allowed to go to ruin by the neglect of the Turkish authorities.   Click the link below to read the article which appears in ZAMAN.

The Church is not protected as a Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO.   Everyone who is concerned about the preservation of Akhtamar,  please e-mail to the following UNESCO Officers and urge them to take immediate action to protect and preserve this most important site as a site of Cultural Heritage:

Please e-mail to Mr. Laurent Levi-Strauss (Deputy Director for the Division of Cultural Heritage, Chief of Section for Tangible Heritage, UNESCO, e-mail: l.levi-strauss@unesco.org   ) and to: Mr. Francis Childe (Senior Programme Specialist, Europe, Asia, Pacific, UNESCO, e-mail: f.childe@unesco.org  )
